Cavanaugh has become a recognized expert on tourism marketing and planning since entering the industry 22 years ago. Since founding Magellan Strategy Group in 2004 with the vision of providing organizations with greater focus upon opportunities in the marketplace, he has worked in strategic planning, marketing, and market research with a diverse group of clients including destinations of all sizes, many attractions, and other hospitality organizations.
Prior to founding MSG, Cavanaugh lead marketing efforts for The Biltmore Company in Asheville, NC for nearly 10 years. Cavanaugh is past chairman of the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority (which oversees the work of the Asheville CVB) and North Carolina’s state travel and tourism board. He was a recipient of the 2015 North Carolina Travel Industry Association Tourism Excellence Award for his work in the industry, and a 2014 winner of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Shining Example Award. Cavanaugh holds a BA degree from Vanderbilt University and an MBA from Emory University.
